Tips for Maintaining Radiant Skin All Winter Long

winter skin

This winter, keep your skin fresh, glowing, and soft with some of these winter skin care tips that will leave your skin feeling happy and healthy all winter long.

Wintertime may welcome the coldest months of the year, but there is a lot to enjoy during this season. From cooking with winter spices to winter grilling to winter meal prep, there are a lot of new things to embrace during winter. Okay, maybe not cold and flu season, but delicious warming foods, recipes, and winter wellness tips can all be enjoyable ways to make the most of the season.

What about something you may not think about during winter? Things like winter skincare? Winter brings with it blustery winds, cold temperatures, and more time spent indoors with forced-air heating. These conditions can make your skin feel dry, dull, and itchy and may even lead to uneven skin tone.

5 Ways to Winterize Your Skincare Routine

#1 Exfoliate

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface of the epidermis (the most superficial layer of the skin), which ultimately relieves the body of dry, dull, lackluster skin. By removing these dead skin cells, pores are free from being clogged and skin is left feeling clean and refreshed, not to mention glowing.

Some of the best ways to exfoliate the skin are by looking for products that contain activated charcoal or using a gentle exfoliating body scrub. You can also try dry brushing, which allows moisturizers to better penetrate the skin, helps with circulation, and supports the lymphatic system.

When exfoliating, it is important to remember to be gentle. Whether using a body scrub, facial cleanser, or spa tools like a dry brush, use small circular motions without applying too much pressure. Do this for about 30 seconds, and then cleanse the skin with lukewarm water, not hot. (See point #4 below). Engage in exfoliation 1-3 times per week, depending on your skin type, and if you are wondering exactly how to exfoliate, here are five tips to safely exfoliate at home.

#2 Hydrate

Water is essential for our bodies and our skin to work at their best. One way to support healthy skin is by staying hydrated. It can be difficult to sip cold water during the winter months, so instead of drinking chilled water, try drinking room-temperature water or sipping on some warming herbal teas like cinnamon, ginger, or peppermint. You can even sip on a mug of warm homemade bone broth, which is loaded with collagen and is great for your hair, nails, and, you guessed it – skin. Don’t have time to make your own handcrafted batch of bone broth? Order some pre-made broth instead.

#3 Load Up on Vitamin C

Cold winter weather usually has us reaching for Vitamin C supplements, but do not forget to add Vitamin C to your winter skincare routine. Adding Vitamin C to your skincare routine can help boost the skin’s defenses and provide antioxidant support. Healthy skin provides a natural barrier, keeping in the good stuff and keeping out the bad stuff.

Vitamin C also plays a key role in the skin’s collagen production and may even help reduce signs of aging, including dark spots, fine lines, sun spots, and wrinkles. Ultimately, adding a Vitamin C serum to your winter skincare routine can help to rejuvenate skin cells leaving you with a bright, clear complexion while helping to create a healthy, strong skin barrier.

However, be sure to check directions when using a Vitamin C serum. Some brands and products may cause the skin to become sensitive to sunlight, so if you are planning a little winter getaway to a warm-weather destination, you may want to ditch the Vitamin C serum a week or two before you travel.

#4 Minimize Hot Baths and Showers

There is nothing more luxurious than a hot bubble bath or steaming hot shower after a long day, but unfortunately, hot water can quickly dry out the skin. During winter, minimize the time spent in a hot bath or shower and instead opt for using warm water.

If hot baths and showers are a non-negotiable, then replace some of the lost moisture from your skin by using a good quality moisturizer or soothing body butter. Look for products made from a blend of nutrient-dense fats and oils tailored specifically to repair and nourish delicate skin cells like coconut oil or shea butter.

You can also purchase a shower filter that removes harsh, drying toxins like chlorine and fluoride from your shower water and keeps your hormones healthier throughout the year as well.

#5 Moisturize

During the winter months, skin benefits from the application of nourishing oils, especially if you live in an extremely cold climate with bone-chilling winds and freezing temperatures. Apply an oil like grapeseed or sweet almond oil before bed or use a soothing body butter. Look for brands that use a blend of nourishing fats and organic oils so your skin will feel hydrated and replenished. Do not forget to apply it to your hands and feet, too.

As winter settles in this season, do not forget to show your skin some extra TLC with these five winter skincare tips.
