IN THE KITCHEN WITH LEXUS ANDERSON
Tell us about yourself:
I’ve been married to my amazing husband for a year and a half, and we have two fur-babies, Yoda & Rey. I’m a girl who loves to stay busy! I’m a stylist at the most gorgeous boutique bridal shoppe in the 417, where I dress brides for their special day and make them feel their prettiest! I enjoy daily yoga practice, weekend kayak trips, and of course, COOKING! I revel in hosting family & friends in our home, making memories along the way around the table. Just recently I had a theme night and whipped up 6 or 7 different Indian food dishes. My next one planned consists of a Greek menu!
How did you get involved in cooking?
I really became interested in cooking when I got married, wanting to provide home-cooked meals, and start our new life out on the right foot, with balanced, healthy food. I was tired of eating processed junk that made me feel blah. For me, being in my kitchen is a way to release stress, and let my creative juices flow! I love the challenge of purchasing groceries for the week with a budget in mind, while also coming up with a unique menu that keeps things interesting!
Describe your cooking style:
When I first began cooking, my main goal was just to learn the basics of what flavors went to together, and use real, wholesome ingredients, on a budget. I’ve progressed from there, still focusing on fresh produce & clean proteins, but have become less afraid to stray from the norm, and try new things! I’m typically not a “use a recipe” person – I like to create as I go! I love to visit the farmer’s market, buy organic when I can, and support local businesses.
How did you learn about grass-fed meats?
Since starting my cooking journey, I’ve become more concerned with the products that I put in my body. Grass-fed meat is just one step in the right direction of eating clean, and your body will appreciate that!
What is your favorite recipe featuring grass-fed meat?
It’s a tough one, but I have to give it up to the never-failing burger, like my rendition: Sweet As A Peach BBQ Burger! Especially during the summer months.
You’re stranded on a desert island; luckily, you’re stranded with your top 5 ingredients and one must-have kitchen tool:
Sweet Potatoes. Without a doubt. So versatile, from savory stews & curries, to the perfect vessel for a protein-packed breakfast – full of yogurt and drizzled in nut butter!
Asparagus. The perfect side dish for almost any meal!
Lemon Pepper Seasoning. Pairs with nearly anything: chicken, pork, veggies, rice – whatever your heart desires!
Homemade Pizza Crust. The best blank canvas for a fridge-cleanout. Toss on whatever you have on hand that needs used up, pop in the oven for 15 minutes, and BOOM! DINNER.
Chili Flakes. I believe you can never have too much spice. I throw these in almost everything!
Best cooking secret/tip/piece of advice you’ve learned:
Don’t be afraid to go for it in the kitchen and experiment! The worst that can happen is the meal doesn’t turn out so great. Big. Deal. There is always room for improvement & learning, and that’s what I love about cooking every day. Aim to try one new thing a week, you will soon have a stockpile of go-to meals if you do this!
What’s your favorite quote/song for culinary inspiration (if any)?
Does “The Office” theme song count? Seriously, I always have it on playing in the background on my laptop! Michael Scott quotes give me life.
Anything else you want to share?
I am so thankful for this opportunity to share my love of food with others who enjoy the same thing. I would love to know if you recreate one of my recipes. Use the hashtag #homecheflexus, so I can see and re-post your meals! As always, Happy Cooking!
