Brain Potency

nitric oxide, alzheimers, dementia, memory,

Dr. Al SearsBig Pharma loves to find new uses for their existing drugs. This concept, known as drug repurposing, is much faster and cheaper than developing and testing new drugs. And even though the drug isn’t new, the company can file for what’s called a “use patent.” That allows the drugmaker to have exclusive patent rights – along with all the profit that goes with it.Big Pharma may have hit the jackpot when it comes to the “little blue pill.”You see, brand New research shows how effective sildenafil – more commonly known by the brand name Viagra – is for your brain.I’ve been telling my patients for years that dementia disorders like Alzheimer’s are connected to a host of other ailments. Including erectile dysfunction. So, I wasn’t surprised when I saw this study published in the journal Nature Aging.

A team of researchers examined how genes associated with Alzheimer’s disease interacted with 66 different Big Pharma drugs. They poured through a massive data set – analyzing insurance claims from more than 7 million Americans – to uncover which of these drugs was associated with the lowest risk for developing the dementia disorder.Sildenafil was the top candidate.1The scientists found that people who took this drug were 69% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s over a six-year period than those who didn’t take it.But brain-protecting effects were seen in just six days…In less than a week, the rEsearchers confirmed that the pill increased neuron growth and reduced the accumulation of tau proteins by 40%.Previous studies showed that phosphodiesterase inhibitors, like sildenafil, decreased the buildup of amyloid plaques… improved cognitive impairment… and enhanced the level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a key molecule in memory function. You see, phosphodiesterase inhibitors like Viagra enhance nitric oxide activity – which helps to relax and widen blood vessels to increase blood flow.

This allows blood and oxygen to flow freely to every part of your body — protecting you from heart disease, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, and Alzheimer’s.The link between nitric oxide and increased blood flow to the brain isn’t new. For years, I’ve been recommending that my patients supplement with a nitric oxide booster to increase blood flow. You release NO from the inner layer of the cells lining your blood vessels. It Relaxes and widens the lining of your blood vessels and allows blood to flow freely.2

Some of the benefits of NO include:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Less arterial plaque and reduced risk of heart disease
  • More muscle mass and increased strength
  • Reduced risk of blood clots
  • Stronger libido

But research shows that NO can prevent — and even reverse — the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.Healthy blood flow wards off the plaques and tangles that are the hallmark of Alzheimer’s. Researchers found that when blood flow to the brain gets to a critically low level it starts a cascade that leads to Alzheimer’s disease.3You see, nerve cells in your brain produce long strands of a protein called APP (amyloid precursor protein). In Alzheimer’s patients, APP production speeds up. It breaks down into smaller toxic proteins called amyloid-beta peptides (ABP). These clump together around nerve cells and choke the cells to death.Scientists at the Clinic now confirm that APP increases when NO in the blood Vessels drops. At the same time, plaque levels in the brain rise and Alzheimer’s rates go up.But when NO levels were increased, the plaques decreased and big memory followed. The – researchers even said keeping NO levels up may be a good strategy for preventing Alzheimer’s.Unfortunately, as you get older your body has a harder time making nitric oxide. By the time you’re 50, you produce only about half as much as when you were in your 20s.

CoQ10, organ meats, blood pressure

The last thing I would ever do is recommend you take a prescription pill every day. And while there aren’t any nitric oxide supplements, there are nutrients that can convert to NO in your body. Two of the best are L-arginine and citrulline.L-arginine is an amino acid that causes a biochemical reaction that creates nitric oxide and dilates blood vessels. Some of the best arginine-rich foods are lobster, spinach, and spirulina. You can also supplement. But make sure you buy either arginine or L-arginine. You can find it in capsules or powders. Avoid synthetic L-arginine.There’s another amino acid you should take along with your L-arginine. After you’ve been using it for a while, an enzyme starts blocking the NO conversion. That’s why you nEed citrulline. It blocks the enzyme so L-arginine continues to make NO.Take L-arginine and citrulline in a 5-to-1 ratio. I recommend daily doses of 6,000 mg of L-arginine and 1,000 mg of citrulline.

You can also boost NO with food. Here are two of the best…

1. Eat More Organ Meat

It’s a real shame that nutrient-rich organ meats have been virtually scrapped from our modern diet. They were a huge part of what made our ancestors as strong and as smart as they were.Organ meats like liver are great sources of CoQ10, which help supercharge your nitric oxide levels. Other good sources include tripe, kidney, and heart.

2. Add Beets to Your Diet

Eat some beetroot. Beets are packed with dietary nitrates. When you eat them, they mix with your saliva and bacteria on your tongue. This combo turns into nitric oxide. You can get the most out of beetroot by chewing it raw. If that doesn’t appeal to you, supplement with 1 gram of beet juice root powder once a day.
