1 to 3 Meals Per Day to Maximize Body Fat Loss with High Productivity

exercise, squats
Scott, I have been eating 5 meals per day based on a book I read recently. My progress has been slow and my energy is lower than when I had the same amount of calories within 3 meals, so how many meals per day is ideal for a women over 50 who is active and wanting to lose body fat fast!

Great question! In my experience, working with thousands of clients, anywhere from 1 to 3 meals per day is ideal for rapid fat burning while maintaining hard earned muscle. A key factor to consider is that changing specific factors such as macronutrient percentages and meal frequency each week is very important for excellent rates of fat burning with high daily energy.

Flexible Fasted Lengths

Clearly eating one meal per day would have a longer fasted period than a day with three meals. Even with the same caloric distribution daily, the one meal per day plan will be more effective for fat burning than three meals for several reasons in my experience. Fasted periods have a distinct impact on the digestive system allowing for a cyclical resting which creates better digestion conditions within a matter of days for many people.

Few Meals = Less Hunger?

Interestingly, clients report less hunger than expected when eating one time per day. According to Dr. Eric Serrano MD all humans are born insulin resistant and based on his patient research with longer fasted periods can result improved hormonal markers that reduce hunger!

Food Rotations Drive Fat Burning Success

The body was not meant to consume the same foods every day. There are 4 seasons for a reason and foods should also be consumed in a seasonal pattern to avoid food allergies, irritations and intolerances. Refined food source cause stomach upset, fatigue and general inflammation for a large portion of the adult population so avoiding refined foods is a simple fix. However a significant percentage of adults also develop poor reactions to healthy foods such as chicken and eggs which creates a very confusing circumstance. Chronic bloating for example can be a sign of poor responses to foods which drives people crazy until they find solutions!

Audit your Foods!

I go through client nutrition plans in detail to rotate new foods into the plan while eliminating those that may be problematic. Clients notice far less hunger and better energy from this process very quickly! Start by taking note of how you are feeling after meals and start to isolate foods that do not make you feel or look good. Kick them out of your plan for 6 to 8 weeks and in many cases these foods can be reintroduced gradually without a problem.

Best Meal Timing?

When consuming two meals per day, for example, it is ideal to consume the largest meal of the day within an hour or so following training. Resistance exercise creates the ideal hormonal and metabolic environment for food consumption. Taking a brisk 15 minute walk following all meals is also great for fat burning and energy!
